Washington, DC - The American Red Cross is helping people in the Midwest where tornadoes and flooding have caused heavy damage to neighborhoods across the region.
In Missouri, 16 tornadoes were reported in the last 24 hours, leaving almost 20,000 people without power. A tornado caused significant damage in the state’s capital, Jefferson City. Officials there report significant, widespread damage after the twister hit the city late last night. Red Cross workers are providing food and shelter in Jefferson City, as well as in Eldon, where three shelters are open for those affected.
In Oklahoma, flooding has forced people to leave their homes. The Red Cross has six shelters open where 82 people spent Wednesday night. Residents of towns along the Arkansas River may have to evacuate and the Red Cross has additional shelters and disaster workers on stand-by if needed.
If you need to find a shelter, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767), visit redcross.org or download the free Red Cross Emergency App. You can also check with your local officials for information on where to find a shelter.
The Emergency App also provides emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of emergencies such as tornadoes and flooding. Users can find it in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.
The Red Cross encourages people impacted to list yourself as “safe and well” on the free Safe and Well website. Family and friends may then search for the name of anyone they are trying to locate. The site is always available and available in Spanish.
The deadly Midwest weather that caused disastrous flooding and more than 170 tornadoes since last Friday is far from over. Heavy rain and flooding is expected to continue across the region. The severe weather is also moving to the east where residents may see tornadoes, wind gusts, heavy rain and hail.
